Olympus mju 1030 SW Digital Camera
September 22, 2008
The original mju was an Olympus flagship film compact product and offered all weather protection. That was taken to digital cameras having solved the problem of heat dissipation from the electronics and sensor when mju 300 was launched. Olympus introduced the recent SW range, taking the above extension a step further with cameras offering full water-proofing, shock-proofing, and freeze-proofing. The camera is categorized under the Tough Moniker that features the robust build of the cameras.
The 1030 SW the latest in the tough range allows under water shooting of up to 10m or 40m with the optional underwater housing. It is shockproof and can withstand vibrations when dropped from up to 2 meters without any damage. Noteworthy among its features is also it being crush proof able to withstand up to 100 kilograms. It is also scratch proof. It has the ability to shoot at temperatures as low as -10°. In a nutshell this could be the perfect camera for a sport enthusiast or the average family with excited kids.
The brain behind the hood
Inside the casing that sports in 3 colors – Platinum, black, and British green, are the following features. The Olympus mju 1030 SW 10.1 MP sensor allows low-light shooting with a top-ISO speed of ISO 1600. The True Pic Turbo III processor offers the same processing engine as the Olympus E-3. This Olympus underwater digital camera controls sharpness, noise-reduction, color rendition, and faster processing at 5.2 frames per second for an 11 frame load in 3MP High-Speed Mode for multi-burst shooting. An optional sequential mode at full resolution offers a more used 0.7fps over 7 frames. The lens is folded optical design meaning its zoom is situated internally and does not extend from the case, using a periscope-like design. Zoom equivalence is 28-102mm making it among the wider zooms in the market. Image stabilization isn’t incorporated in the sensor or the lens. Instead, the camera uses Digital Image Stabilization compromising the ISO range during a camera shake at low lights.
Additional features include 24-scene modes that are menu-driven along with the type of photography they are designed to deal with. An useful camera for the novice seeking good images. 3-underwater modes that ladders the cameras underwater capabilities.
