Konica Minolta Q-mini Digital Camera

October 27, 2008

The Konica Q-Mini offers a reasonable feature set for some decent prints and it is for the not-too-serious-consumer. Though good for outdoor shots where flash is not needed, it does a decent job of indoor get togethers too. Design wise, the Q-mini is not really the best of a designer's imagination. Square in shape it fits nicely in one's hand. The camera does not have an optical viewfinder whose function is replaced by a 1.8" LCD panel on the backside. While the LCD image is sharp and bright it is not so in the record mode. There is a stop-motion effect that you experience when trying to move your camera around to frame a subject. It is a tilt LCD that you can angle while trying to frame something on the ground without having to crouch. It is a 0.31mp resolution point-and-shoot. There is a standard CompactFlash memory card (2MB). This is used to store 23 images in the normal mode, 47 images in the economy, and 11 images in the fine mode. A new card can replace the old card when the memory is full. It has an image resolution of 640 x 480 pixels a common feature in the digi-cam market. This Konica digital camera does not boast the best macro mode in the industry and unless the subject is not naturally well illuminated the flash washes it out rendering a fuzzy image. The Konica shares the sixth place with the Olympus C 410-L and the Agfa for image quality rating (though skin imperfections are a little too distinct in the absence of a filter). There is a flap that is hinged on the right side of the unit which houses three AA batteries. Although the battery life is unknown the LCD uses up the batteries quickly. The camera does not have any kind of a zoom. The camera has a built-in flash. A power switch turns on the camera, easily switchable between play modes and record. In play mode images that are stored can be displayed single, 4 at once, or 16 on screen. To delete the image that is currently displayed you need to press the erase button and then the  shutter. To delete all pictures stored in the memory you will have to press the erase button twice and then the shutter button. There is a white balance feature for the camera to judge what is white with fluorescent lighting. The camera has a self-timer that delays by 10 seconds before the click. A CD contains a software and Adobe PhotoDeluxe as well as the image downloading software. You can connect this camera to your video using the SCART socket on your television. The final verdict is that the Q-mini is not a badly rated digital camera but there is nothing special about it either. It states a decent image quality with a fair set of features but finally there are better units that one can find on test. Sure it is a good replacement to a polaroid while making test compositions.  It is easy to use, easy to hold, and can take phenomenal close up shots that are sharp. There is good exposure control. It is just exceptional for anybody who is beginning photography.

Konica Digital Revio KD-500Z Digital Camera

October 24, 2008

Today, there are many models of digital cameras in the market from various quality houses and the average consumer is a sophisticated as well as a confused person.

The Konica Digital Revio KD-500Z 5MP Digital Camera is designed, keeping in mind this highly sophisticated consumer. This advanced digital camera renders up to 2592 x 1944 pixels to its smart sensor and comes quite light-weight, compact (the world's smallest camera in the 5mp, 3x optical zoom category that can easily slip into a shirt pocket with room to spare), and in an easy to use design weighing just 6.9 ounces. This ultra-slim design enhances portability. Its exterior is made of stainless steel and is of classic dark grey shade with a green/blue LED indicator rendering it a contemporary appearance. A sliding lens protector not only protects its lens, but also adds to the camera's appearance. The Hexanon zoom lens (KD-500Z 3X optical; equivalent to 39-117mm on a 35mm film camera) and a true image zoom viewfinder are both proven professionally. This camera has a 2x Digital as well. The 5.23mp CCD resolution is pretty satisfactory, and the brain behind the crisp, clear pictures, enabling sharp enlargements (11" x 14"). This camera has a built-in flash. Operational recording modes include single, red-eye reduction, continuous photo, macro, flash-on, night-view portrait, landscape, 3X Digital Zoom (with limited wide-angle capability), self-timer, movie, sepia, and black and white. Night portrait mode works on slow syn flash and slow shutter speed for close range photography without losing a dimly lit background. The KD-500Z features new key custom modes like AE Lock and AF Lock similar to many other SLR cameras in terms of spontaneity and ease of use. White balance settings and exposure corrections can be made manually by the press of a button. Other added features include monochrome photo and continuous shot functions. There is a macromode that allows shooting as close as 6cm from the subject. It takes only 2 seconds between each shot and has a 1.4 second start-up time.

In addition to basic photography this camera has the ability to record and playback short movies (AVI Video 320x240, max of 30 seconds) with sound, as well as attach 15 second voice memos to still images. There are a range of functions that can be tailored to meet the needs of a beginner to a professional photographer as well. This camera features both Memory Stick card slot and SD/MMC memory card slot. This camera also includes a 1.5- inch TFT color LCD monitor approx, apart from 120,000 pixels, USB interface, flash (built-in with a range of 10-feet), rechargeable lithium-ion battery (the ultra-slim DR-LB4 3.7v 820 mAh pack) for 100 photographs with LCD on, recharging unit, AC adaptor, and stylish blue LED indicators. This camera has a maximum shutter speed of 1 second and a minimum shutter speed of 1/2000 seconds. Another unique feature of the KD-500Z is its blue LED that lights up when the shutter is half-press letting the subject know that a picture is going to be taken.

A note about the battery. The above mentioned battery is the only kind of battery that can be used with this camera so having a spare would be a good idea. Most of the cameras options is accessed through the main-menu system which can be an arduous task at times. Konica Digital Revio KD-500Z 3 x Optical Zoom Digital Camera captures stills in the JPEG format and there are two compression levels to choose from. Lens zooming is followed by a bit of noise, and reveals moderate barrel distortion at the wide-angle end and autofocus is found a bit slower than average. Its optical viewfinder shows 84% of the image and is not very sharp. Colors are accurate. You can also get digital camera accessories include Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 software. The final verdict is that the Konica Digital Revio KD-500 Z is a camera capable of delivering good enlargements and is highly portable, but, one definitely cannot expect prosumer features with it.
