In the incident six police personnel and a bus driver who drove the match umpires, were killed. Six Sri Lankan cricketers including captain Mahela Jayavardena, Kumara Sangakkara and Thilan Samaraweera suffered from shrapnel injuries, as the fourth umpire Ehsan Raza was shot on the back. The latter is said to be in a critical condition. Samaraweera was reported to be the worst hit with a grievous thigh injury. Other players hit are; Tharanga Paranavitana, Ajantha Mendis, thilan Thushara.

English match referee, and father of England fast bowler Stuart Broad, Chris Broad was also among those who were travelling in the match officials' vehicle that followed the bus, which carried the Sri Lankan team.
