Stanford Scientists develop Open Source Frankencamera

September 7, 2009

professor-marc-levoy-and-graduate-student-andrew-adams-with-frankencameraResearchers at the Stanford University have conceived an open-source camera, Frankencamera, that is probably the world's first open-source camera. The camera reportedly consists of a Nokia N95 mobile camera module, a couple of Canon lens, a circuit board and Linux operating system.

The current prototype of the Frankencamera is made up of some parts borrowed from dead cameras and its creators have said it to look ugly. The best part of this camera is its open-source platform that provides programmers the facility of creating algorithms in order to process pictures in a different forms rather than depend on the forms offered by the leading camera manufacturers such as Nikon, Canon, etc.

One result the researchers have been able to achieve in the lab is being able to extend the camera's dynamic range making it capable of handling a wide range of lighting in a single frame. Ideally, the whole process of wide-dynamic-range imaging involves capturing pictures of a particular scene with different exposures and then combine all of them to create a composite image on a PC using the processing software.

The researchers are still working out to make the camera churn out better videos by using high resolution pictures. Within a year, this platform is expected to be ready to hit the shelves.
