Types of Telephoto Lens and Their Functions

A lens with longer focal length more than 50mm is all said to be telephoto lens. The ranges fall 
between 70mm till 500mm tele lens are categorized as short tele lens and long tele lens. Short lens between 60-85 mm are good for taking portraits from a considerable distant. The longer lenses with longer focal length are usually recommended for capturing action scene at wildlife shots or major sporting events. Telephoto lens has major function of blowing up the subject from a longer distance. It has the ability to crop in tightly on the subject, bring out the perfect tonal details and give importance to the subject by eliminating the background. Therefore, the composition will look very lively with lots of impact and life.
Normally telephoto lens has limited depth of field so it is an advantage for professional photographer. With the limited depth of field, it can keep the background out of focus and give more impact to the subject. Usually Lens with longer focal length and wider aperture will have less depth of field. Professional photographer prefers to go for telephoto lens for longer shots because focusing the subject with tele photo lens is much more critical and offers less error. With the maximum and wider aperture setting and longer focal length, the long telephoto lens will provide few inches of depth of field for a subject in a longer distance of about five meter away.
When compared to wide angle lens the tele lens brings the subject much closer together then they actually been placed by compressing the space around. Wide angle lens has wide perspective for the subject. When you use tele photo lens it is important to keep the camera steady with out any camera shake. A small camera shake will create a big impact on the subject and the subject will be magnified as the lens gets longer. It is advisable to use tripod for any delicate shots.
The basic focal length lens preferred by professional photographer is 300mm lens. They use it for capturing close up shots of live action wildlife scene or capturing images of sporting event in the field. 300mm focal length lens is a shortest lens that helps you to reach enough to capture live action on any field even though it requires you to get closer to the subject. Three category of 300mm focal length lens are available with different aperture setting such as 300mm f2.8 lens, 300mm f4.5 lens and 300mm f5.6 lens and each has its own advantage and usage pattern over the other.
